The Chequers
Project Type: Renovation, Modernisation and Extension
Location: Oxfordshire
Recent Farmhouse Renovation Contract
The Chequers, a charming country estate farmhouse in Oxfordshire, has recently undergone a comprehensive renovation, modernisation, and extension. Contracted by the estate owners, the project focused on enhancing the farmhouse’s comfort, energy efficiency, and functionality while preserving its rustic charm and traditional character.
Renovation and Modernisation
The renovation involved updating the traditionally built farmhouse with modern amenities and energy-saving features. A key aspect of this was the installation of underfloor heating throughout the ground floor, ensuring a comfortable and energy-efficient environment. To further maximise energy efficiency, extensive insulation was added wherever possible, reducing heat loss and improving overall energy performance.
Preserving Country Character
Despite the modernisation efforts, retaining the farmhouse's original character was of utmost importance. Existing fireplaces and oak beams were carefully sandblasted, revitalising their appearance while preserving their historical integrity. Additionally, new double-glazed, solid wood windows were installed throughout the property, blending modern energy efficiency with the traditional aesthetic.
Extension with High-Quality Standards
The extension project focused on creating a new kitchen and utility area built to the highest modern standards. Reclaimed stone from the estate was used in the construction, maintaining a sense of continuity and connection to the property’s heritage. The extension seamlessly integrates with the existing farmhouse structure, thanks to the use of locally sourced natural Cotswold stone from a nearby quarry with a long-standing relationship with the estate.
An oak-framed timber structure provides a charming overhang, complementing the farmhouse’s rural character. Bi-folding kitchen doors open to the outside, allowing for a flow of natural light and easy access to the outdoor space, enhancing both the aesthetic appeal and functionality of the new kitchen area.
Kitchen and Outdoor Enhancements
The new kitchen, a focal point of the renovation, features a large, solid wood design with elegant solid quartz worktops, offering both style and durability. The kitchen’s layout and materials were selected to reflect both the farmhouse’s traditional roots and modern convenience.
To complement the interior renovations, a new patio area was added, creating an inviting outdoor space for relaxation and entertainment. Freshly laid turf further enhances the landscape, providing a lush, green backdrop that adds to the property's overall appeal.
Overall, the renovation of The Chequers has transformed the farmhouse into a modern yet character-rich residence that remains in harmony with its Oxfordshire country estate setting. The project’s success lies in its careful blend of old and new, marrying traditional elements with modern functionality and energy efficiency.
